The minotaur was a mythological creature, half man and half bull, dwelling at the centre of a vast labyrinth. The result of an unnatural union between human and animal as a result of a curse of Poseidon, god of the sea, the fierce monser was eventually slain by Theseus, the legendary hero who founded Athens.
